The City of Troy is a thriving community that is diverse, dynamic, and committed to providing a high quality of life. The Communications Department increases community awareness and involvement in programs, services, and community events. Staff shares information with public officials, residents, visitors, the business community, and City employees, utilizing all means of communication. This position reports to the Communications Director.
DUTIES
- Work closely with all Communications staff to support the overall mission of the City of Troy through consistent, clear, and creative communication best practices.
- Provide supervision of assigned employees, including preparing and conducting performance evaluations, participating in discipline or corrective action planning, delivering feedback, disseminating information, etc.
- Use independent judgment and creativity to:
- Implement and ensure consistency of the City of Troy’s branding, communication, and graphic standards.
- Create and disseminate educational and promotional materials about programs, events, services, and departments in print and online.
- Coordinate with various departments and Communications Department staff to provide information on all programs and events, keeping up to date with day-to-day activities related to the City of Troy.
- Develop and implement various communication plans related to specific departments and their priorities; track and evaluate appropriate metrics.
- Manage large-scale creative projects while collaborating with appropriate staff, including various City Departments and the Communications Department.
- Identify opportunities to engage and educate the public on City services and operations.
- Assist in the management of all communication channels, including but not limited to: the City website, social media profiles, e-newsletters, digital displays, print materials and public events.
- Utilize time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set project priorities.
- Utilize, develop, and maintain systems that allow for streamlined workflows for projects, marketing requests, and other items that best connect the Communications Department with other City of Troy Departments.
- Develop and implement strategies for citizen engagement.
- Remain current on trends and best practices to continue to deliver innovative, relevant, and creative content.
- Assist as needed with citywide communication initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Four years of recent full-time work experience, or the part-time equivalent, in marketing, public relations, or a similar role.
- Candidates with an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other Creative Cloud products.
- Experience with content management systems (Drupal, WordPress, or similar).
- Skill in preparing written documents for publications.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise, mentor, and motivate team members to achieve departmental goals, ensuring performance standards and deadlines are consistently met.
- Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing, and make presentations to internal and external groups.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with residents, elected officials, employees, and professional contacts.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, dynamic, fast-paced environment, using excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to critically assess situations, analyze data, recommend effective marketing and/or communication solutions, and work effectively within deadlines.
- Ability to set priorities and use independent judgment in a variety of situations to successfully complete projects.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out-of-state applicants must provide a current driving record at the time of application and obtain a State of Michigan license within one (1) month of appointment.
- As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).
PREFERENCES
- Work experience within local government operations.
- A Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree.
- Recent supervisory experience.
HOURS Full-time, year-round; Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, evenings and weekends as needed.
