Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Community Services, the Museum Docent serves as the Township’s “face of the Museum.” The employee works closely with the Director and his/her designee to implement a variety of programs that meet the educational, recreational and social needs of the citizens in the Township and surrounding areas.  Responsibilities extend to acting as a tour guide for school and chartered groups throughout the year, greeting visitors, selling items in the gift shop, recording donations, light cleaning, and working Museum special events. The Museum Docent is a part time position (10 - 25 hours per week depending on Museum need.) Some evening and weekend work will be required. See tentative Museum Hours of Operation below.

Sunday & Monday: Closed

Tuesday: 3 – 7 pm

Wednesday – Saturday: 12 – 4 pm

November – December Holiday Hours*

Essential Job Functions, Duties, & Responsibilities

An Employee in this position may be called upon to perform any of all of the following essential job functions, duties, and responsibilities. The following describes the general nature and level of work to be performed and is not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed in this position:

  • Greet and welcome visitors and groups upon their arrival at the Museum.
  • Conduct museum tours. Be comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people of all ages.
  • Deal skillfully with a diverse group of visitors of all ages and abilities under a variety of circumstances.
  • Assist with tour support and tour group confirmations.
  • Help with development of docent tour outlines, manuals and trainings of new Belleville Area Museum docents.
  • Cash handling of gift shop purchases and donations.
  • Continually keeping informed about changes in museum exhibits.
  • Participate in special events, such as Festival of Holiday Trees, Booville, Harvest Fest, etc.
  • Schedules volunteers for shifts & oversees volunteers while on duty.
  • Assist visitors with genealogy research process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma minimum; Preferred Undergrad Degree in Museology or Museum Studies
  • Enjoy meeting and interacting with other people

  • Must be physically able to lead tours around the museum
  • Must have an enthusiastic personality and ability to be flexible

Physical Abilities and Work Environment

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites; when visiting parks or construction sites the incumbent may be required to walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, be exposed to all weather conditions, dust and pollen, and mechanical hazards such as construction equipment; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside Township boundaries to attend meetings.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
