Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Perform difficult and skilled inspection of electrical installation to assure compliance with the City's ordinances.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is under the direct supervision of the Chief Electrical Inspector and general supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of the Department of Building & Safety Engineering.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
Inspect electrical installations during construction, alteration and completion, test completed work to insure use of proper materials and compliance with City ordinances.
Assist and advise electricians, contractors and others in making out applications and issue permits.
Investigate violations of electrical ordinances while in the field, take necessary action to enforce City ordinances, make court appearances.
Investigate complaints in regard to defective electrical installations.
Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public regarding electrical practices and City ordinances.
Prepare periodic records and reports of inspections, complaints and violations.
Work in cooperation with building, heating, zoning and plumbing inspectors, and other personnel.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Reasonable knowledge of materials, tools, methods and techniques used in electrical work to insure compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
Reasonable knowledge of safety precautions and hazards arising in electrical work.
Ability to perform inspections of electrical installations for use of proper tools, practices and procedures.
Reasonable knowledge of City ordinances relating to electrical installations.
Ability to understand and work with specifications, blueprints and drawings.
Ability to prepare comprehensive reports in connection with inspections and violations of City ordinances.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
ICC certifications; Residential Electrical Inspector, Commercial Electrical Inspector and/or Electrical Plans Examiner
Requirements
Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
o Diploma or official, sealed transcripts REQUIRED with application - Four (4) years’ experience in the installation of electrical systems.
- Must possess and maintain an Electrical Master's license.
o License REQUIRED with application - Possess an Electrical Inspector’s registration issued by the State of Michigan in compliance with Skilled Trades Registration Act 407 of 2016.
- Must become ICC certified in Residential Electrical Inspector and Commercial Electrical Inspector within six months of hire.
- Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan.
- Driving record must meet city’s standards for insurability.
Pay rate: $72,547/year - $83,039/year (after 5 years) *
*Does not include the contractual increase of 7/1/26
